In addition to electroshock, one of the earliest methods to gain significant traction with the public was the theory of animal magnetism, or Mesmerism, developed by German doctor Franz Anton Mesmer. However, the lack of a clear understanding of electromagnetic theory throughout the 19th century did not stop creative entrepreneurs from developing devices that purported to cure medical ailments. It took several more decades for the mathematical laws of electromagnetism to be fully described, and several more decades beyond that before practical and legitimate uses for electricity in medicine were implemented. Luigi Galvani conducted a number of experiments using frogs and scientifically demonstrated a relationship between biology and electricity. Legitimate understanding of the relationship between the human body and electricity began to develop in the late 18th century. Using charges of static electricity to deliver shocks to a patient, medical electricity was used to treat various ailments from tumors, ulcers, gout, fevers, and headaches. It was around this time when medical electrostatic devices arose. With the invention of the Leyden jar in the mid-1740s, electrostatic devices were frequently constructed for various novelty purposes. ![]() An inadvertent side effect of this transformation was the creation of an industry of pseudoscience involving bizarre electromagnetic devices that purported to cure nearly every disease and ailment. Electrical technologies also revolutionized the medical industry. It completely transformed society and gave humanity new tools to understand the world and ourselves. Among other things, usage of electricity opened new doors for communication, transportation, information processing, and automation. The electrical revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries sparked one of the most profound shifts in human culture. The next four screens are also formative, and are more focused on multiplicity, where I find many students get tripped up when working with polynomials. Nothing crazy, just trying to see where student thinking is and help them do some informal work sketching and seeing sketches of polynomials. Then, I would pause and project a few examples anonymously to discuss why they are or are not polynomials, and show students a few different ideas of what the function could look like. I would use teacher pacing here, so that students can only work on these two screens and can’t go further ahead. They are meant to give me a rough idea of how my students conceptualize polynomials. The activity is linked here if you’d like to play along.īelow are the first two screens. I’m having trouble clearly articulating what I like about this activity that I don’t find in some others, but I’ll try to lay out what I was going for below. And I want it to stay laser focused on a few key ideas that I want to get across. I want this activity to provoke useful thinking, and to do so using tools like sketching and interactive Desmos graphs that are impossible with a pencil and paper or whiteboard and marker. There’s nothing very flashy about this activity, no high-engagement tasks that students will want to keep coming back to. My goal was to bridge some of the gaps between using vocabulary to describe polynomial functions and writing polynomial functions that meet certain conditions. I wanted to design a new activity, one that falls after Polygraph at the start of the unit but before students start doing more formal algebraic work. ![]() Students just end up fiddling with different functions until they find something that works, and in the process they may or may not learn what I want them to learn about polynomials. It can be great for certain features of polynomials, but can also suffer from some elements of task propensity. Students solve challenges where they need to build functions that meet certain conditions. I’ve previously used this Desmos activity. My polynomial units often feel flat and uninspired and I wanted to add a wider variety of activities. I spent a bunch of time this summer thinking about polynomials. They are valuable activities and I’m glad I am able to use them.īut in this post I want to offer an alternate perspective that tries to avoid the challenge of task propensity. They let students see math as a dynamic process, learning about objects that make sense and follow certain rules - and learning those rules is what learning math is all about. These activities are incredibly engaging - students love them, and are often asking for more. Marbleslides offers one paradigm for what Desmos activities can look like. They are likely to solve Marbleslides challenges through trial and error without paying attention to the structure of the mathematical objects they’re working with, or they get frustrated and use functions outside of the family I want them to learn about. ![]() At the same time, I find that a subset of students - usually the students who are already struggling - learn less than I would hope through these tasks. I love Marbleslides and I use variations on it often. Students solve challenges like the one above by rewriting the function so that when the balls drop, they capture all of the stars. I think the best example of task propensity is Marbleslides. I first learned about task propensity through this paper, and you can read the rest of my thinking on the topic here. I’m exploring how task propensity relates to Desmos activities and how this thinking could help me teach more thoughtfully with those tools. In short, they lose the forest for the trees. Task propensity refers to situations where students are so focused on the features of a specific task that they don’t generalize their thinking in a way that is useful to solve different problems in the future. The Commencement Program from Le Moyne College includes the following: ![]() Simple geometry classes include LineGeometry, RectangleGeometry, and EllipseGeometry and are used to create basic geometric shapes, such as lines, rectangles, and circles.Ī LineGeometry is defined by specifying the start point of the line and the end point.Ī RectangleGeometry is defined with a Rect structure which specifies its relative position and its height and width. The classes which derive from the Geometry class can be roughly grouped into three categories: simple geometries, path geometries, and composite geometries. The base class for all geometries is the abstract class Geometry. The following table lists several classes that have properties that take a Geometry object. The preceding sections mentioned that Geometry objects can be used with other objects for a variety of purposes, such as drawing shapes, animating, and clipping. By setting the Data property of the Path with a Geometry and setting its Fill and Stroke properties, you can render a Geometry. One Shape, the Path class, actually uses a Geometry to describe its contents. While a Shape object is used to render 2D graphics, a Geometry object can be used to define the geometric region for 2D graphics, define a region for clipping, or define a region for hit testing, for example. Because they are elements, Shape objects can render themselves and participate in the layout system, while Geometry objects cannot.Īlthough Shape objects are more readily usable than Geometry objects, Geometry objects are more versatile. The Geometry and Shape classes seem similar in that they both describe 2D shapes (compare EllipseGeometry and Ellipse for example), but there are important differences.įor one, the Geometry class inherits from the Freezable class while the Shape class inherits from FrameworkElement. For more information about the different features provided by Freezable objects, see the Freezable Objects Overview. More complex geometries can be created by using the PathGeometry and StreamGeometry classes, which enable you to describe arcs and curves.īecause a Geometry is a type of Freezable, Geometry objects provide several special features: they can be declared as resources, shared among multiple objects, made read-only to improve performance, cloned, and made thread-safe. Geometry objects can be simple, such as rectangles and circles, or composite, created from two or more geometry objects. ![]() You can even use a geometry to define an animation path. These geometric descriptions have many uses, such defining a shape to paint to the screen or defining hit-test and clip regions. The Geometry class and the classes which derive from it, such as EllipseGeometry, PathGeometry, and CombinedGeometry, enable you to describe the geometry of a 2D shape. This topic also contrasts the differences between Geometry objects and Shape elements. This overview describes how to use the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) Geometry classes to describe shapes. |
